The current state of Bangladesh cricket is in turmoil. The many problems that have emerged are not resolving themselves rather, they seem only to grow worse.
This appears to begin at home in Bangladesh, where there is currently a great deal of civil and political unrest that has apparently migrated into the cricketing arena. There are serious internal power struggles between members of the Bangladesh cricket board, as well as deteriorating relationships with other cricket boards around the world.
7 Players Involved in Match-Fixing in Bangladesh Cricket
Now players are speaking out against the board, and the situation has deteriorated to the point that the team was forced (by government intervention) to withdraw from the T20 World Cup 2026. The Bangladesh cricket board is attempting to start a new league, with no funding or sponsorship, the WBPL has also been delayed.
Amidst this chaos, an astounding revelation emerged. In a local match being played in Chittagong, there was an allegation made against seven players for match-fixing. There were rumors that these players did not play up to their best abilities, and some even hurt themselves in an effort to influence the result of the game.
Five-Year Ban on Coach as Well
With respect to this incident, harsh penalties were imposed not just on the players but also on their coach. Their coach has been banned from participating in all forms of cricket for five years. The authorities have now become stringent about such issues. However, this is not an individual case.
Before that, there have also been many other cases of match fixing which have come up in the Bangladesh Premier League. Some high-profile officials have been named in these scams, and videos have even come out with them being seen in meetings with shady characters.
On the Playing Field Too
The combined impact of all these problems can easily be seen from how the team performs on the playing field. At present, the team is ranked low on the list of Test teams and has not managed to play very many ODI games.
However, the recent success of their series against Pakistan has brought back some hope for them. In the coming days, the team hopes to put up a good show against cricketing giants like New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.
There is great desire by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to try again to start up the WBPL league. The Board is also taking active steps toward strengthening its relationship with India. In other words, Bangladesh cricket is in bad shape right now, but if they proceed on the right course, there should be improvements.
