Arshdeep Singh, India’s left-arm fast-bowler, made an exceptional debut in ODIs, securing a memorable five-wicket haul against South Africa, crucial in India’s emphatic victory over the hosts.
Crediting simplicity and strategic plans, Arshdeep highlighted, “The plan was simple: hit good areas, extract bounce, and seek movement off the seam. Challenging the batters to score off tough deliveries was key on the used Wanderers pitch.”
Arshdeep’s impactful spell included dismissing key Proteas batsmen within the first ten overs. Reeza Hendricks fell to a chopped delivery, Rassie van der Dussen trapped lbw, and Tony de Zorzi’s aggressive play led to his dismissal. Heinrich Klaasen’s stumps were disturbed by a well-directed ball from Arshdeep.

Reflecting on the unexpected turn of events from pre-match plans, Arshdeep admitted, “We anticipated a high-scoring match but observed pitch conditions and moisture. Keeping it simple paid off, enabling us to pick up crucial early wickets.”
The left-arm pacer credited his experience in the County Championship at Kent, acknowledging the learning curve in recovery, individual training, and game comprehension. Despite a modest wicket tally during the stint, it empowered him with insights into his gameplay, enhancing confidence at the international level.
Arshdeep concluded, “The County stint taught me recovery techniques, and game understanding, and bolstered my confidence. It played a pivotal role in my ability to bowl effectively after a rigorous opening spell.”
