With the selection of KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel in the Test squad for the first two games against England in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, the spotlight has now shifted to the inclusion of Kumar Kushagra and Upendra Yadav in the India ‘A’ team for the second and third four-day games against England Lions in Ahmedabad.

New Faces in India ‘A’

While Upendra was part of the India ‘A’ team during their 2021 tour of South Africa, Kushagra received his maiden call-up to the squad. According to former India wicketkeeper-batter Ajay Ratra, their selection indicates that the selectors and team management have closely monitored their domestic performances.

“In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Ratra stated, ‘India ‘A’ is your second-best Test team, and with them being selected for those games, it means that the selectors and team management are keeping an eye on those two, based on their domestic performances for a long time.”

Wicketkeeping Pool Expansion

With Rishabh Pant still on the path to recovery from injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022, India has seen three different wicketkeepers in Test cricket since February 2023 – Bharat, Ishan Kishan, and KL Rahul. Bharat’s gradual progression from the ‘A’ team set-up to Test cricket exemplifies the system’s efficacy.

Kishan, on a mental health break since December 2023, and Jurel, earning a Test call-up based on his domestic and ‘A’ team performances, indicate a dynamic approach by the selection committee.

Kushagra’s Remarkable Journey

Kushagra, following his India ‘A’ call-up, showcased his talent by converting an overnight unbeaten fifty into a magnificent 132 for Jharkhand in a Ranji Trophy match against Services. Last month, he secured an impressive INR 7.2 crore deal with Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2024 Player Auction in Dubai.

Ratra recalled seeing Kushagra as a young keeper at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, stating, “The way he showcased his glovework at the U16 level made for an awe-inspiring look.”

Upendra’s Big-Hitting Prowess

Upendra Yadav, known for his big-hitting abilities and consistent performances for Uttar Pradesh and Railways in first-class cricket, adds a different dimension to the India ‘A’ squad. Ratra, while acknowledging not having seen much of Upendra, sees the India ‘A’ selection as a great opportunity for both him and Kushagra.

Future Prospects

As the cricketing fraternity anticipates the development of these emerging talents, Ratra concludes, “If an overseas series comes up and whether India would take KL Rahul as a keeper there, there’s some time to it. But India ‘A’ selection is a good opportunity for both Upendra Yadav and Kumar Kushagra.”

The India ‘A’ platform provides a valuable opportunity for young wicketkeepers to showcase their skills, contributing to the expansion of the national wicketkeeping pool and setting the stage for potential future selections in the senior team.
