JJ Redick Debuts As Head Coach

Redick is not a conventional choice given that he has no prior coaching experience. He retired in 2021 after playing 15 seasons in the NBA with six teams. He has played mostly with the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.
He then started his stint as an NBA analyst and commentator. He became the lead critic of ESPN’s telecast of the 2024 NBA Finals on the ABC.
With his appointment, the Lakers will have Redick leading a roster headlined by James, who is six months younger than him. Both host a popular podcast called “Mind The Game” where discussions on basketball technique and motivation grip the attention of the listeners.

Though Redick’s coaching experience is limited to his children’s youth teams, he has been around the game his entire life. He is the leading scorer in the history of Duke, where he played four seasons under Mike Krzyzewski.
The Lakers experienced a disappointing 47-35 campaign in 2023-24 that ended with a loss to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs in five games. JJ Redick was then roped in after UConn basketball head coach Dan Hurley rejected Los Angeles to return to Storrs.
The 39-year-old would be challenged with transforming the fortunes of the Lakers in the coming years.
