Cricket fans worldwide were stunned when former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was implicated in a murder case. The case, filed by Rafiqul Islam, accuses Shakib in connection with the death of Rafiqul’s son Rubel, who was killed on August 7 during ongoing protests in Bangladesh. The complaint, lodged at the Adabor police station in Dhaka, names Shakib as the 28th accused among 154 individuals, including former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Currently, Shakib is in Rawalpindi, participating in the first Test of a two-match series against Pakistan. Rafiqul Islam’s lawyers have demanded Shakib’s immediate removal from the series.

A legal notice has been issued to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), urging them to ban Shakib from all cricket activities. BCB President Faruque Ahmed has announced that the board will decide on Shakib’s status after the first Test concludes.

Faruque Ahmed commented, “We have not yet received the legal notice. We are aware of the FIR and the ongoing investigation, but no charges have been filed yet. We will make a decision after the Test match ends.”

“We are focused on the Test match right now. It’s positive news that we performed well on the fourth day. Tomorrow is the final day of the Test, and we have not yet discussed the legal notice. Once the match concludes, we will review the situation and the notice we receive,” he added.

Decision Timeline

Faruque Ahmed further explained that the BCB will decide on Shakib’s involvement during the break between the first and second Tests, which starts on August 30.

“The FIR is just an initial report, and no formal charges have been made yet. It’s challenging to make a decision at this stage. The BCB’s relationship with Shakib is contractual, and we need to address the legal notice appropriately. We cannot remove him in the middle of the Test match,” he said.

“The second Test begins on August 30, so we have time to consider our options during the interval between the matches,” he concluded.
