McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has recently called for Formula 1 to make some changes to the new power unit rules.
He thinks Formula 1 should have power coming from the engine and less from electric power.
The drivers have been talking about this issue throughout the 2026 season. They are not happy with the way the engines and electric power work together.
Now, Formula 1 has a 50/50 split between the engine and electric power. This means the drivers have to be careful with the energy they use during a race.
A lot of drivers are complaining about the power units. Some people think Formula 1 should use engine power in the future.
Like everyone else, Oscar Piastri wants something done about this problem.
Oscar Piastri On Engine Split
Oscar Piastri said that he knows things need to change. He also said that making changes to the rules will not be easy, but we need to do something about it.
He said, “We are all aware that things should change and things need to change going forward. I understand that it’s not an easy thing for all the manufacturers to effectively redesign things again, so quickly, after so much investment.”
“We all know that things need to change at some point in the future, and where I sit on is the sooner the better, really.”
Not only Oscar Piastri, but there are many drivers who are not happy with Formula 1 power units. They really do not like the way the engines work and the way they have to drive to go.
Max Verstappen, the world champion, also said that Formula 1 should have more engine power. He said that a 60/40 split would be the minimum he would want.
However, companies like Ferrari, Audi and more that are making the engines do not agree on changing the rules. Some of them have spent years working on the current engines and have spent a lot of money. So not all of them want to make changes
Oscar Piastri acknowledged and said that he understands that different teams have opinions. He said, “There’s obviously a lot of different reasons up and down the grid, which I really understand. Everyone’s going to have their different reasons for wanting different things, but I think as a sport we need to go towards a more combustion-heavy split.”
Formula 1 is now trying to find a balance between technology being environmentally friendly and making the races exciting.
