Japan Skateboarding Championships Park: Curtain Raiser To LA 2028

3 Min Read

Skateboarding is set to return to where it all began for the Olympic Games. After a successful run at the Paris Olympics 2024, skateboarding has caught the fancy of sports lovers at an increasing rate.

The Japan Skateboarding Championships park will be held at Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo over this weekend, the very site where the sport made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. As part of the Games’ legacy program, Ariake has been fully renovated for the public opening earlier this month

Park competitions take place on a course that is a hollowed-out concrete bowl with several different elements including ramps, quarter pipes and bumps.

The crowd is thrilled by watching multiple air tricks. Skaters take advantage of the sloping sides of the course to build momentum and speed before launching themselves into the air to perform amazing tricks.

Several variations come into play with skaters flipping or rotating the board, turning their bodies, grabbing the deck, or posing in the air.

Here is all we know so far about the Japan Skateboarding Championships Park:

Two of Japan’s three female Olympians in the park event this summer – silver medalist Hiraki Cocona and Yosozumi Sakura, the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist – are out with injuries. While Cocona is struggling with a broken right ankle, Sakura is recovering from a broken wrist. The other Olympian, Kusaki Hinano, did not enter the field.

A total of 33 men and 19 women have been listed for the Japan Skateboarding Championships Park. Owing to the inclement weather forecast for the weekend, the championship schedule is subject to change.
