Indian athletics calendar 2025: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced a busy schedule for the 2025 season, starting with the Cross Country Nationals in January. One of the biggest events on the calendar is the Indian Open World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour, which will be held in India for the first time.

The senior track and field season will begin with the Indian Open Throws event in March in Mumbai. The World Athletics Continental Tour will be a major highlight, with top Indian athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, expected to compete.

It is still unclear when Neeraj Chopra will start his season. The two-time Olympic medalist has usually started his season abroad, but there are suggestions that he may compete more in India this time, as the AFI would like to see him compete on home soil.

Highlighting the calendar is the inaugural Indian Open World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour in August. “The Continental Tour will be a good opportunity for the Indian team to showcase their potential on home ground before the World Championships in September,” said AFI President Adille Sumariwalla.

The World Athletics Championships, scheduled for September 13-21 in Tokyo, Japan, will be the main focus of the year. Other significant international events include the World Athletics Relays on May 10-11 in China and the Asian Athletics Championships from May 27-31 in Korea.

Sumariwalla also explained that India’s top race walkers will not participate in the Asian Race Walking Championships in March, emphasizing the importance of peak performance at the World Championships later in the year. “The core group of Indian race walkers clock a good time in March but aren’t able to repeat the performance later in the season. Since the main focus in 2025 is the global competition in September, we have decided not to send the elite team to Japan in March,” he said.
