Maaya Revathi is an Indian tennis player who has made it to the headlines with her outstanding performance at the Mumbai Open 2025.

The tournament is a part of the WTA 125 tournaments and was introduced in 2017. The tournament just resumed last year after an absence of 5 years and this year, it started on 3rd February and concluded on 9th February. There were 8 seeded players in the tournament however number 1, Tatjana Maria decided to withdraw and was replaced by Petra Marčinko.

Maaya gave the performance of a lifetime as she entered the tournament with a wild card. She reached the semi-finals of the tournament, even though this was only her fifth professional event.

She won three matches against Iryna Shymanovich who is World Number 225 to advance to round-16, and Zarina Diyas who is also a former top 50 player. She faced Mei Yamaguchi in the quarter-finals and beat her with a score of 6-4, 3-6, and 6-2 to make it to the semi-finals of the Mumbai Open.

Regarding her victory, she said, “All of this is a bit new to me, One thing I was happy about is that I did maintain a good level throughout the matches,”
“That’s something I’ve been working on because earlier, I used to have a lot of ups and downs.
I’ve played so many three sets in the last few months, and I won most of them,” she added.

However, she lost to 5th seed Jil Teichmann who also ended up winning the title. Nonetheless, her incredible performance in the tournament is on the news, so let’s take a closer look at her achievements so far.

Maaya was born on 12 June 2009 in Coimbatore. She began playing tennis at the age of 8 and decided to compete because she enjoyed “pressure.” She started competing at the ITF at the age of 13 and became a top 60 junior player. Her talent was spotted by the Rafa Nadal Academy where she currently trains.

She has played 7 ITF tournaments where she won 6 of them and lost only 1 in the singles category. She also appeared in 5 doubles matches and won 4 of them. She has also won 5 junior titles, 4 J60s, and 1 J100.

Her playing style is aggressive baseline rallies with accurate net play. This style has drawn comparisons to some legendary players like Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka who share a similar style.

She shared her thoughts regarding the same, “I’ve always been aggressive, ever since I picked up a racquet”.

For her future goals, she said, “To do well in the junior Slams — I’ll be playing the main draws for the first time. But since I’ll be Top 700 [after Mumbai] I’ll have to play some women’s ITFs too. I’m making the transition [from juniors] a bit quicker than I thought.”
