FIH Women’s Nations Cup: New Zealand Crowned Champions

The FIH Women’s Nations Cup is an international women’s field hockey tournament held annually. The tournament serves as a qualification tournament for the Women’s FIH Pro League. The 2024-25 edition was the third edition of this tournament and was held in Chile. 

It started on 23 February, and the final match took place yesterday, on 2 March 2025, between New Zealand and Ireland, where the former emerged victorious. This victory also marked the promotion of the team to the 2025-26 Women’s FIH Pro League.

New Zealand faces Ireland for the final match of the tournament on 2 March in a much-anticipated game. The game ended in a draw after regular time. The match proceeded to a penalty shootout where New Zealand won by 4-2 which secured the team the victory in the FIH Women’s Nations Cup.

Holly Pearson of the winning team said, “Obviously during the match, we were up 1-0 for majority of the game. But in the second half, Ireland really put us under the pump and scoring that goal was tough for us. But yeah, very happy to get the win in the shootout. It’s something we have been practising for a long time”.

The event featured eight teams, New Zealand, Ireland, Chile, United States, Scotland, Japan, South Korea, and Canada. 

FIH Women’s Nations Cup: Tournament Award-Winners

The best player of the tournament was awarded to Holly Pearson of New Zealand. The HERO top scorer was awarded to Dabin Jeong of Korea while the best goalkeeper was claimed by Natalia Salvador of Chile. The best junior player was bagged by Mikalya Power of Ireland.

Ireland finished second, and Chile finished third. Fernanda Flores of Chile shared her thoughts on the tournament, “It was not easy because we really dreamed of the Pro League and top ten. But we are very proud of the team and the staff, we have a full change of staff since last year. It’s not easy but we are moving in the right direction.”
