The match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 6, 2025, at Wankhede Stadium turned into one of the most thrilling games of this year’s IPL. After several rain delays and a dramatic one-over finish, Gujarat Titans won by three wickets, leaving MI fans heartbroken.
But the real story was the last-ball drama, a missed run-out that could have changed everything.
What Happened in the Final Moments?
Due to rain, the game was shortened. In the end, GT needed 15 runs in the final over by the DLS method. With top bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult already done with their spells, Deepak Chahar was given the responsibility to bowl the last over.
He had a tough time. He was using an old ball and struggled to control it. He gave away two boundaries and even bowled a no-ball. The pressure was on, and GT got close.
With one ball left, GT needed just one run to win. That’s when the chaos happened.
The Missed Run-Out That Cost MI the Match
Arshad Khan of GT hit the last ball towards mid-off and went for a quick single. Hardik Pandya, the MI captain, picked the ball up. A run-out could have sent the match to a Super Over. But there was no one at the stumps.
- Deepak Chahar didn’t return to the stumps after his follow-through.
- Suryakumar Yadav was too far away.
Pandya tried a direct hit, aiming at all three stumps. But he missed. Arshad Khan made his ground, and GT won the match.
Hardik Pandya Reacts After the Match
After the game, Pandya admitted the loss was tough to take but praised the team’s fight.
Definitely a tough way to go down. But we fought well, especially with the kind of total we had. It was definitely not a 155-run wicket. We were short by 10-15 runs or maybe 30 runs. But we kept fighting. It was a game of margins,” he said.
This defeat ended MI’s six-match winning streak, which had put them back into playoff contention.
Gujarat Titans’ Lucky Escape
GT had looked strong in their chase before the rain came. But once play resumed, they lost key wickets Shubman Gill and Sherfane Rutherford, and were falling behind the DLS score.
Still, with some smart hitting and a bit of luck in the final moments, they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
Mumbai Indians will look to bounce back when they face Punjab Kings on May 11 in Dharamsala. With playoff spots still open, every game from now on is like a final.
