Spain pulled off an upset against defending Olympic and world champions United States in the women’s 4x400m at the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 2025.
The events were held on May 10-11 in Guangzhou, south China’s Guangdong Province.
The Spanish team, made up of Paula Sevilla, Eva Santidrián, Daniela Fra, and Blanca Hervas post the winning time of 3:24.13 to clinch the gold.
Fra, running on the third leg, handed the baton to Hervas, who then carried it across the line in a national record of three minutes, 24.13 seconds.
The Americans finished second place in a time of 3:24.72 at World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 2025. South Africa followed shortly behind the US in a national record time of 3:24.84.
In the men’s 4x400m relay, South Africa won the gold with 17-year-old Leendert Koekemoer made giant strides before handing the baton to Zakhithi Nene who crossed the finish line in a world lead of 2:57.50. Belgium took the second spot in 2:58.19, while Botswana came third in 2:58.27.
In the mixed event at World Athletics Relays Guangzhou, the United States produced a dominant display in the to claim their third gold in the event. While Australia gave a tough fight in the first leg, but US’ Johnnie Blockburger delivered a brilliant run, with Lynna Irby-Jackson comfortably crossing the line in the championship record of 3:09.54.
Australia finished second two seconds behind them in an Oceania record of 3:12.20. Kenya rounded of the podium in 3:13.10 at World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 2025.
