Cricket Namibia CEO Johann Muller said:

“This dream has taken four years, and now it’s finally a reality. Starting this world-class ground with a match against our neighbours, South Africa, is a perfect way to open it.”

Even though Namibia and South Africa are neighbouring countries but have never played against each other in an international match not in any tournament or bilateral series. This match is a big sign that cricket relations across Africa are growing stronger.

Cricket South Africa CEO Pholetsi Moseki also said:

“We are proud to be part of this occasion. Namibia is a competitive team, and this fixture shows that cricket in Africa is moving forward. As a host of the 2027 World Cup, we are happy to support the opening of this new venue.”

Namibia’s recent form

Namibia will also play in Africa T20 World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe before this match where two teams will qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka. Namibia has already played in the last three T20 World Cups. Their biggest win was against Sri Lanka in 2022 at Geelong.

More Africa-based matches lined up

Later this year, South Africa will also travel to Zimbabwe — after 11 years — for two Test matches and a T20I tri-series. This is another step toward building a stronger cricket calendar for Africa.
