Wiaan Mulder becomes the youngest Test captain with a triple century
South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder made history on Monday at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. He scored a triple century on his first Test as captain against Zimbabwe. This is the first time anyone has scored 300 runs on a Test captaincy debut. Along with this, Mulder also broke many other big records.
Mulder, who is 27 years old, not only helped his team reach a strong position but also became the youngest Test captain to score a triple century. He broke the 1969 record of Graham Dowling, who had scored 239 runs on his captaincy debut against India in Christchurch.
He continued batting from his overnight score of 264 not out and later broke the 2003 record of South African captain Graeme Smith, who had scored 277 runs against England. That was the highest individual Test score by any South African captain.
He completed his triple century in only 297 balls, which is now the second-fastest triple century in Test history. The fastest triple-century record still belongs to Virender Sehwag, who did it in 278 balls against South Africa in Chennai in 2008.
Mulder also moved ahead of Harry Brook, who had scored his triple century in 310 balls against Pakistan in Multan last year. Mulder was playing only his 21st Test match and became the second South African player after Hashim Amla to score a Test triple century.
Now his name is among a few players who have scored triple centuries while being captain in Test cricket. He is now the youngest among them. At 27 years and 138 days Mulder broke a 61-year-old record. This record earlier belonged to Bob Simpson who had scored 311 against England in Manchester in 1964 at the age of 28 years and 171 days.
In the same week India’s current Test captain Shubman Gill also scored 269 runs against England at Edgbaston but could not break the record.
