CD vs HH: Central Districts (CD) broke their shackles in the Global Super League (GSL) 2025 by registering a heart-stopping 16-run victory against Hobart Hurricanes (HH) with the help of a strong partnership between Tom Bruce and Curtis Heaphy, and a match-winning spell of bowling by Ajaz Patel.

Central Districts Turn the Tide After Early Setbacks

Choosing to bat first following two failed runs in their last games, Central Districts lost Dane Cleaver and Will Young within the powerplay. Having only 37 runs against them on the scorecard after the sixth over, and 40/3 at the eighth, the tension was piling up.

It was then that the game changed with a thrilling 113-run fourth wicket stand between captain Tom Bruce and Curtis Heaphy. The partnership was for 12 overs and at a rapid rate of 73 balls. Bruce made 61 off 35 balls, Heaphy made 50 off 38 balls, providing solidity as support.

Bruce was eventually dismissed in the penultimate over by Odean Smith, but Matthew Forde finished the innings in style with 6, 6, and 2 off the final three deliveries. CD posted a competitive total of 167/4.

Ajaz Patel Spins a Web Around Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes were unable to build any momentum on their run chase. Like their rivals, they were two down in the powerplay and then crumbled to 38/3 in the 8th over. Central Districts’ bowlers were consistent, and by the 15th over, when the Hurricanes were 84/6, six of the Hurricanes’ batsmen were already back in the sheds.

Ajaz Patel bled the bowling unit ably, claiming 4 wickets for a mere 18 runs and leaving Hobart on the back foot. Blair Tickner also ably supported with telling breakthroughs.

Nabi and Allen’s Late Charge Not Enough

Despite the dire straits, Mohammad Nabi and Fabian Allen put up an admirable fightback, with their 65-run seventh-wicket partnership providing Hobart some hope.

Nabi scored 43 off 25 balls, playing the part of a senior player and rotating the strike and using all he had to help raise the score. Allen did not get out on 36 off only 16 balls, hitting the ropes five times. But the revival came too late, and Hobart Hurricanes fell short by 16 runs, scoring 151/7.
