Shohei Ohtani , the Los Angeles Dodgers phenom is already one of the most accomplished athletes in baseball history—but now he’s stepping up to the plate in a whole new arena: children’s literature.
Ohtani has co-written a charming new picture book titled “Decoy Saves Opening Day,” inspired by his beloved dog, Decoy, a Dutch Kooikerhondje known to fans for his ballpark cameos and spirited personality. The book, set to be released by HarperCollins on February 3, 2026, follows Decoy as he prepares to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day—only to realize he’s forgotten his lucky baseball at home. A frantic but fun-filled race against time ensues as Decoy tries to save the day.
For The Love Of Dog: Shohei Ohtani Writes On Decoy
Illustrated by Fanny Liem and co-written with Michael Blank, the story captures the excitement of game day through a pup’s perspective—with themes of friendship, determination, and the magic of baseball.
Ohtani announced the project on Instagram, posting an adorable photo of Decoy sitting proudly next to an early copy of the book. “Decoy Saves Opening Day” features a whimsical cover illustration of the dog holding a baseball in his mouth, with Ohtani in his Dodgers jersey standing proudly beside him.
But the book is about more than just baseball. Ohtani hopes the story will shine a spotlight on the Kooikerhondje breed, which he says is in decline. “The number of the breed has kind of dwindled, so by him gaining a little bit of popularity, hopefully that brings up the number of his breed,” Ohtani told the Associated Press through a translator. “I do feel like we were able to, in a small way, contribute to the popularity of the dog, and I’m sure Decoy himself would be happy about that.”

Decoy, already a mini-celebrity in his own right, has had his share of the spotlight—he threw out a first pitch at Dodger Stadium last summer and joined the Dodgers’ World Series victory parade after their win over the New York Yankees.
Ohtani also revealed that proceeds from the book will go to non-profit animal rescue organizations, further cementing his commitment to animal welfare.
With this new literary endeavor, Ohtani continues to surprise and inspire fans—not just with his unmatched talents on the field, but with his compassion, creativity, and love for animals.
