David De Gea’s Emotional Return to Old Trafford

Manchester United return to Old Trafford to host Fiorentina in their final pre-season game ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

The Red Devils welcome Arsenal to the Theatre of Dreams in their 2025/26 opener next weekend, and Ruben Amorim will want to make the most of the time he has remaining with his players this summer.

Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea has responded to Bruno Fernandes’ cheeky message ahead of Saturday’s Snapdragon Cup at Old Trafford, which is live on MUTV.

David and Bruno are two of United’s most important players in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, with their four Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards each a clear recognition of their significance.

Having played at United together from 2020 until 2023, the pair became great friends and are clearly looking forward to re-uniting at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday.

“I hope I score some goals against you!”

United captain Fernandes sent his former team-mate a video on Wednesday, in which he said, “I hope I score some goals against you!”

De Gea has since replied, stating: “Hello, as you know, I’m coming home. For sure, it’s going to be a special game for me.”

In what promises to be a special occasion, De Gea returns to the stadium where he made 271 appearances as a Red. In total across his 12-year United career, he played 545 times, putting him seventh in the all-time United list.

Responding to Bruno’s message, the United icon added:

“Bruno, you know, you cannot score against me, and if you score, it’s because I let you score so people keep singing your name!

“But honestly I can’t wait to see you, my friend. I can’t wait to see you all at Old Trafford, so I’ll be there on Saturday, see you soon!”

Fans will have an opportunity to pay tribute to De Gea on his first return to M16. Pre-match, Bruno will make a presentation to his old team-mate to recognise De Gea’s contribution to the club.
