The wait is finally coming to an end. Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will release on May 26, 2026, and fans around the world can’t wait to dive into its massive new world. Since it’s been 13 long years since GTA 5 came out, many players are asking the same question: Do you need to play GTA 5 before GTA 6?

The short answer is no, but playing GTA 5 can still make your GTA 6 experience even better.

GTA 6 is a Fresh Start

Most GTA games are standalone, and GTA 6 is no different. The new title is set in Leonida, which includes a return to the iconic Vice City. The story, characters, and world will be brand new, so you don’t need to know what happened in GTA 5 to understand GTA 6.

Just like earlier games in the series, GTA 6 may include references, Easter eggs, and nods to older titles, but its storyline will stand on its own. So, even if GTA 6 is your first GTA game, you won’t feel lost.

Why Playing GTA 5 Still Helps

Even though it’s not required, playing GTA 5 before GTA 6 can prepare you in many ways:

  • Understanding gameplay mechanics: GTA 5 teaches you how missions, jobs, robberies, and side activities usually work in the series. This gives you a smoother learning curve when you jump into GTA 6.
  • Getting familiar with GTA Online: If you’ve tried GTA Online, you’ll know how multiplayer features, customization, and player interactions work. Rockstar will likely expand these ideas in GTA 6.
  • Spotting Easter eggs: The GTA 6 trailers have already shown familiar brands like Ammu-Nation and Dinka, along with returning vehicles such as the Seashark and Buzzard helicopter. Playing GTA 5 first will make spotting these callbacks more enjoyable.
  • Comparing improvements: By playing GTA 5 now, you’ll appreciate just how far Rockstar has come in terms of graphics, world-building, and storytelling when GTA 6 launches.

A Better Immersive Experience

For longtime fans, playing GTA 5 again can create a sense of nostalgia before heading into Vice City. The world of Los Santos might not connect directly to Leonida, but the similarities in style and references will make GTA 6 feel even more alive.
