Arundhati Reddy’s Injury Stuns India in Warm-Up: Team India was left worried on Thursday, September 25, when pacer Arundhati Reddy suffered a freak injury during the warm-up match against England at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground in Bengaluru.
How the Accident Happened
The moment came in the 13th over of England’s innings after India chose to bowl first. Arundhati Reddy, in her follow-through, tried to latch on to a sharp return catch from Heather Knight. But she lost her balance and landed awkwardly on her left leg, collapsing in pain.
Rodrigues Steps In to Finish the Over
Medical staff rushed in right away. At first, they tried to help her walk off, but she couldn’t put any weight on the injured leg. A wheelchair was eventually brought out to take her off the field. Jemimah Rodrigues, who had only just returned after recovering from a viral fever, stepped in to complete the over and gave away a boundary to Nat Sciver-Brunt.
Arundhati Reddy’s Early Impact with the Ball
Before the mishap, Arundhati Reddy had bowled steadily, dismissing Amy Jones for 39 – an innings that featured six boundaries. She finished with figures of 4-0-34-1 before being carried off.
Who Could Replace Her if Needed
If she doesn’t recover in time for the upcoming World Cup, India has backup pacer Sayali Satghare waiting in the wings. The selectors could also turn to Prema Rawat or Priya Mishra if they decide to strengthen the spin department.
Depth in India’s Pace Attack
The pace unit still has depth with Kranti Gaud, who has already claimed a six-wicket haul in her career, and Renuka Singh, who recently made her comeback after nearly nine months on the sidelines.
Next Up: New Zealand and the World Cup Opener
India will play their second warm-up game against Sophie Devine’s New Zealand on Saturday, September 27, at the same venue. The big tournament then kicks off for them on September 30, when they face Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
India has twice reached the ODI World Cup final, in 2005 and 2017, but on both occasions, they fell just short, losing to Australia and England, respectively.
