T20 World Cup: List of all Player of the Tournament Award winners

4 Min Read

India won its third T20 World Cup title after defeating New Zealand in the final of the tournament in a convincing fashion by 96 runs, courtesy of a strong performance from the top three batters while batting first and a solid finish by Shivam Dube at the backend of the innings.

The Record

India also broke a couple of records after the thumping win over the Blackcaps at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, one of which was to defend the crown, which the team won in Barbados in 2024, by getting the better of South Africa in a last-over thriller against South Africa.

The Win

The Suryakumar Yadav-led side became the first team to defend its title. In addition to that, India also became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil. The Men in Blue now hold two of three ICC white-ball tournaments in the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, and will have a chance to win the ODI World Cup as well, scheduled to be played in 2027.

The Performers

The win wasn’t a straightforward one as the home team found itself in tough situations throughout the tournament, but had different players putting their hand up to bail it out of trouble, starting with captain Suryakumar Yadav’s half-century, which he scored against the USA when India had lost early wickets.

Like Surya, it was Ishan Kishan who showed the way forward against Pakistan in Colombo on a wicket that wasn’t easy to bat on, but his counterattacking knock helped the team post a challenging total on the board.

The Bowling

The Indian batters were complemented by the bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah, who won the player of the match award in the final for his match-winning spell of 4 for 15, and was well supported by the likes of Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh.

The Game Changer

Despite different players bailing India out, the team wasn’t at its best in terms of performance, and one of the reasons for that was the failure of the opening pair to get theteam off to a good start, a concern which was taken care of by Sanju Samson, whose inclusion changed the fortunes of India’s batting.

Sanju scored 321 runs in just 5 matches, including three consecutive half-centuries in the virtual quarterfinal against West Indies, in the semifinal against England, and in the final against New Zealand, which earned him the player of the tournament award.
