Incomplete Catches Rule In IPL 2026: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has issued an urgent notice to all clubs participating in the IPL’s new tournament holding (i.e., Team Series), on or before the start of the new season (IPL 2026) about addressing incomplete catch issues. The governing body will be placing a greater emphasis on enforcing existing rules regarding catches than prior seasons.
What Are “Incomplete Catches” in IPL?
The main concept of incomplete catch involves if the fielder has full control of both his or her own body and that of the ball before executing a valid catch. According to clause 33.3 of the IPL Playing Conditions:
“A catch is only considered complete when the fielder has total control over the ball and their movement.” This implies that if a fielder starts celebrating prematurely or loses their balance before making a valid catch, it may be considered invalid.
BCCI Highlights Key Rule with Video Examples
During a recent meeting, the BCCI officials showed multiple video clips to the captains and team managers of different teams, including examples from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Some catches were considered unfair due to a lack of complete control.
The meeting was intended to clarify any confusion for the players regarding how the concept of incomplete catches will be considered in the future.
Match Officials Stress Strict Implementation
Former India pace bowler Javagal Srinath and top umpire Nitin Menon addressed the captains in the 90-minute meeting.
They emphasized that:
Fielders should be in a state of balance after catching the ball
Control over the movement of the body is a must
Only after the catch is completed should the celebrations begin
Essentially, the message was that any kind of deviation would result in the catch not being considered valid.
Impact Player Rule to Continue
In addition to talking about the incomplete catch issue, the BCCI confirms that the Impact Player Rule will continue to be used through 2026 and beyond.
Despite many players, including Axar Patel, strongly criticizing this rule, the BCCI has decided not to consider changing the Rule at this time.
Axar Patel said that the Impact Player Rule makes it less important for teams to have an all-around player since they are now looking for a specialist.
No Immediate Changes Before 2027
According to officials, any re-evaluation of the Impact Player rule will not happen until after the 2027 season. For now, teams have to continue making adjustments to their approach based on the current structure.
