In a major move from PSL to IPL, Spencer Johnson has signed for the Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming IPL 2026. The Australian left-arm pacer will replace Nathan Ellis, who has been ruled out due to injury.
Nathan Ellis Ruled Out of IPL 2026
The Chennai Super Kings were left with no option but to look for a replacement after Nathan Ellis suffered a hamstring injury during training.
The news was soon confirmed by the IPL governing body that the pacer would be missing the entire tournament, and the franchise had to look for a replacement for him at the earliest. It is a big loss for the franchise as Ellis is an established pacer who can bowl effectively in the middle and late stages of the game.
Spencer Johnson Signs with CSK for Rs 1.5 Crore
Having previously failed to sell at the IPL 2026 auction, Spencer Johnson has now joined CSK for Rs 1.50 crore. His addition is part of CSK’s strategy to boost their fast-bowling options halfway through the season.
Johnson also has 2 years of IPL experience (2025 KKR; 2024 GT), but his past performance has not been great. CSK will be hoping that he will perform in some critical situations during this season.
PSL to IPL Trend Continues
Johnson is not the only player making this switch from PSL to IPL. Other players are also making this switch. Some of the notable players who have made this switch so far are:
Dasun Shanaka
Gudakesh Motie
Blessing Muzarabani
The trend is showing more and more players are making this switch.
CSK’s Death Bowling Concerns
One of the biggest challenges for CSK would be to replace Nathan Ellis’ spot in the death overs. Nathan Ellis was a man known for his precision bowling and slower pace, and handling pressure situations is not an easy task.
Currently, the overseas pace bowling options like Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes are more suited for the new ball. Similarly, the Indian pace bowling options like Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj are more suited for the early overs. Therefore, the void in the death bowling would only add more significance to Johnson’s spot.
