Indian football has often lacked a clear long-term structure, especially at the grassroots level, and Ranjit Bajaj has spent years trying to change that in his own way. A former India U-19 player, he stepped away from playing early and put his focus into building a system that could consistently produce players instead of chasing quick success.

That idea became reality with Minerva Academy FC. Over time, the academy has turned into one of the most reliable talent pipelines in the country, producing hundreds of players who have gone on to represent India at the youth level. The approach has stayed simple, focusing on discipline, proper training, and giving players the kind of exposure they usually don’t get.

The strongest validation of that work came in the 2017- 18 season. Minerva Punjab, built largely around young players, went on to win the I-League. It wasn’t expected, and that’s what made it stand out. A smaller club, without the same resources as others, shows that a development-first model could actually deliver results.

Ranjit Bajaj’s incredible sacrifice to send his U-15 boys to MIC Cup

One part of Ranjit Bajaj’s journey that often gets talked about is what he was willing to risk off the pitch. To send his under 15 team to the MIC Cup in Spain, he pawned his wife’s jewellery and took loans. It wasn’t a comfortable decision, but it came from a belief that players needed to experience football outside India to truly improve.

What followed made that risk worth it. Minerva’s U 15 team defeated Liverpool FC youth side 6-0 during the tournament. It was the kind of result that people didn’t expect, but it highlighted something important, that the gap isn’t always about talent, but about opportunity and exposure.

Ranjit Bajaj has never really stayed quiet either. He’s been openly critical of how football is run in India, which has made him a polarizing figure. Some see him as someone pushing for change, others think he goes too far, but either way, he has kept attention on issues that often get ignored.

At the center of it all, his work has been about building something sustainable. Not just a team, but a pathway. And in a system that still has a long way to go, that in itself stands out.
