India could be heading towards a major selection call ahead of a packed hockey calendar, with the Sports Ministry indicating it prefers separate squads for the upcoming World Cup and Asian Games to manage player workload and maximise results.
As per a recent report, the debate regarding the two future major hockey tournaments, the FIH 2026 Hockey World Cup to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands starting from 15th August to 30th August, and the Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, starting from 19th September to 4th October, has accelerated due to the short time between these two tournaments.
Even though these tournaments don’t take place at the same time or there is no overlap, there are serious worries about the standard of play suffered by both teams due to the small time period available for players to physically recover between these tournaments.
Asian Games Takes Priority Due to Olympic Qualification
Sources within the Sports Ministry have made it clear that their priority lies with the Asian Games. The reasoning is straightforward. A gold medal at the Asian Games guarantees direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That makes it a high-stakes event where India cannot afford to fall short.
According to a ministry source, the ideal approach would be to send the strongest available squad for the Asian Games, while fielding a separate but competitive side for the World Cup. The ministry has already communicated to national federations the need to maintain a strong bench strength, ensuring a ready pool of players who can step in for major tournaments without compromising performance levels.
However, the coaching staffs, Craig Fulton – men’s head coach, Sjoerd Marijne – women’s head coach, are apparently in agreement on maintaining continuity within their respective rosters, choosing to field as much continuity and consistency as possible in terms of team chemistry and selection for upcoming tournaments, rather than using rotation as a way of trying out players or providing extra playing time to younger players.
Hockey India Yet to Take Final Call
Hockey India, for now, is keeping its options open. Secretary General Bholanath Singh said the federation will send the best possible teams to both events, but has not finalised any squad combinations yet. He added that all factors, including workload, performance, and scheduling, are being carefully considered before taking a final call.
Selection Strategy Could Shape Long-Term Plans
This isn’t the first time such a dilemma has come up. In previous years, when the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games were scheduled close together, similar concerns around burnout and squad rotation were raised. The difference this time is the absence of hockey from the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which puts even more focus on how India manages its two biggest tournaments of the year.
Depending on how they decide about scheduling, this specific decision will also determine how the long-term hockey strategy will be structured in India. Choosing to have two teams will allow them to measure how deep the hockey talent pool is locally – something that the sport’s governing body believes is extensive.
However, if they choose only to have one “core” hockey team, then it seems they would be placing an incumbent emphasis on consistency and maintaining “known” combinations versus testing new combinations out at the same time.
So, for now, the final call remains pending.
