South Africa Women vs India Women: India’s Strong Start Ends in Batting Collapse
India were well on track for putting up a good total after posting 99/2 by the 13th over, aiming for a total over 160. But they suddenly faltered and lost eight wickets in 48 runs to end up at 147.
Shafali Verma was their leading run-getter with 57 runs off 31 deliveries in her 100th T20I. Anushka Sharma also showed promise by scoring 28 runs to be the only other Indian batter to pass the 20-run mark.
The bowlers of South Africa played an equally efficient role as follows:
Tumi Sekhukhune – 3 wickets
Chloe Tryon – 3 wickets
Nonkululeko Mlaba – 1/17 in 4 overs
Shafali Verma Shines in Her 100th T20I
Shafali became the youngest person to score a hundred in T20 Internationals at 22 years of age. In her innings, she made an aggressive start and quickly reached the 15th half-century of her T20 International career by scoring 57 runs from 37 balls despite an early dropped catch at 28 runs.
She capitalised on several scoring opportunities during the power-play and was able to set up a solid base for the rest of the team’s innings, but ultimately India’s batting performance as a whole left much to be desired. Her exploits will go down as the high-point of India’s innings.
South Africa’s Fielding: Early Errors, Strong Comeback
South Africa was slow on their feet during the fielding department, as important chances were missed initially:
- Shafali and Anushka both got away due to dropped catches.
- Missed return catch by Nonkululeko Mlaba.
- Missed catching chance at backward point.
But soon the players pulled themselves together:
- Laura Wolvaardt caught a quick wicket in Richa Ghosh.
- Contribution of Annerie Dercksen in run-out.
- Nadine de Klerk completed an amazing diving catch.
This was one of the major factors that kept India short of the target.
Wolvaardt and Luus Seal the Chase with Authority
South Africa chased down a total of 148 runs with ease in their innings. Starting off, South Africa’s openers Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus combined for an outstanding opening partnership of 106 runs.
Wolvaardt reached her 15th T20I fifty with superb touch and playing some great shots. Luus found her form with a well-deserved fifty.
Even though both batters were out prior to South Africa completing the chase, there was no doubt about the outcome of this game. Tazmin Brits and Annerie Dercksen finished off the job by running out the last two balls that were needed for South Africa to win 17 balls.
India’s Bowling Struggles Continue
The Indian bowlers were unable to protect the low score:
- Kranti Gaud gave away 20 runs in 2 overs.
- Anushka, on her debut, bowled only one ball that yielded 4 runs.
- Shree Charani, who is left-arm spin, was hit hard, giving away 39 runs in 4 overs.
The South African batsmen, particularly Wolvaardt and Luus, utilized their footwork and sweeps to counter the Indian spinners.
