Chennai Super Kings Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been hit with flak from a lot of people over his strikingly slow innings in the IPL 2026 match played against the Gujarat Titans at Chepauk Stadium.

He had completed a half-century but because he scored the half-century at such a slow rate, many fans and analysts are debating whether they should be concerned about Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ability to produce runs moving forward.

Fans Criticize Gaikwad’s “Test-Style” Approach

Ruturaj Gaikwad was unable to score quickly enough to help CSK in a match where they needed fast runs. After getting to 50 runs on 49 balls, there were many reactions on social media with some users saying that he was performing like a test cricketing player rather than playing an innings with the same intentions or strategy as a T20 cricketer.

In the era of high impacts per match experienced by a large majority of teams in this latest style of play, where there is no restriction of runs scored by teams in their last three or final overs due to increased use of ‘Impact Players’, most supporters felt an overly conservative mindset hinders a team’s ability to score a competitive total when batting first.

Slowest Half-Century for CSK: A Record Gaikwad Would Want to Forget

A new record for the slowest-ever fifty scored by any player representing Chennai Super Kings during an inning was set at today’s last cricket match played between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

The slowest half-century in IPL history belongs with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who became a joint holder next to fellow players Murali Vijay and Dwayne Smith, by reaching their fifty scores in 49 actual balls bowled. Both will now be recorded as the fourth-slowest ever to do so representing CSK.

Former player Parthiv Patel continues to hold onto his long-standing record (fifty fell at 53 balls) for scoring the slowest fifty (in terms of actual balls) in the history of CSK.

Impact Player Era Highlights the Concern

The introduction of Impact Player Rule has greatly improved the rate at which IPL cricket games can be scored since it was introduced in 2023, and a majority of teams often achieve a score over 200-250 runs during IPL matches.

Due to the new rules being introduced into the game and the change in how teams score runs, Gaikwad’s slow innings become an even larger part of this new rule.

This innings is now part of what will be considered to be one of the slowest half-centuries recorded in IPL history during the years that this rule has been included, which raises concerns for both the player and for the adaptation of players today in modern day T20 cricket.
