Emma Raducanu endured a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) loss to France’s Diane Parry in her opening match at the 2026 Internationaux de Strasbourg on Tuesday, marking her first clay-court appearance of the season. The clay tournament also marked Raducanu’s return to the WTA Tour after spending more than two months on the sidelines due to a post-viral illness.
The former US Open champion entered the WTA 500 event as a replacement player and reunited with coach Andrew Richardson, who guided her to the US Open title in 2021.
Meanwhile, Diane Parry came into the encounter with full confidence after winning the Clarins WTA 125 title in Paris on Sunday. She lifted the trophy after her opponent, Madison Keys, was forced to retire from the final despite taking the opening set.
Emma Raducanu lost momentum quickly
The 37th-seeded Raducanu started on a positive note, moving well around the court and earning an early breakthrough to take a 4-2 lead in the first set. However, Raducanu quickly lost momentum as Parry responded with an immediate break back. Raducanu’s third double fault of the match, followed by a powerful Parry forehand, handed the Frenchwoman another consecutive break and the opportunity to serve for the opening set.
Parry, ranked world No 94, saved two break points under pressure and, backed by strong home support, closed out the set after 56 minutes of a high-voltage battle.
Raducanu regrouped well at the start of the second set and once again moved ahead 4-2, but everything repeatd as Parry instantly broke back. 23-year-old continued, with double faults piling up, and her eighth of the match combined with a loose forehand gifted Parry another chance to serve for victory.
Emma Raducanu will be next seen in action in 2026 French Open
But Raducanu showed resilience with an excellent return game to level the score at 5-5. Both players exchanged breaks once more in a dramatic encounter before the match eventually headed into a tense tie-break.
Although Raducanu looked sharp, Parry grabbed the opportunity following a few errors to secure an impressive win. Raducanu will be next seen in action in the French Open 2026, which is scheduled to start on May 24.
