The full schedule and pairings for Norway Chess 2026 have officially been revealed, and chess fans are already looking forward to two blockbuster clashes between reigning world champion D Gukesh and World No.1 Magnus Carlsen.

The elite tournament will begin on May 25 in Stavanger, Norway, and continue until June 5, featuring some of the biggest names in world chess.

Alongside Gukesh, India will also be represented by R Praggnanandhaa in the open section, while Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh will compete in the women’s category.

But the biggest talking point remains the two Gukesh vs Carlsen battles scheduled for Round 4 and Round 10.

On May 28, the opening round will see Gukesh take on Magnus Carlsen. In that initial match-up, Gukesh will be using White and Carlsen will be using Black. After this initial round, on June 5, both players will face off again when Carlsen plays with White and Gukesh uses Black.

Considering how they are playing now, both players should have a strong chance to reach the late stages of the tournament, and therefore, the outcome of the head-to-head match-ups will play an important role in determining their finishes in the tournament, and, eventually, who wins the tournament.

This tournament is critical for Indian teenager Gukesh even beyond simply providing him the opportunity to compete against players such as Magnus Carlsen. Before the end of 2026, Gukesh will be trying to defend his world championship title against Uzbekistan’s GM Javokhir Sindarov

This tournament gives him a great chance to gain some momentum as he approaches the championship final.

In addition, this tournament once again enables the young Indian prodigy to demonstrate he can compete at the absolute top level, including against Magnus Carlsen. Norway Chess will provide another opportunity for him to show he deserves to be considered among the top players in chess.

As a participant in the Open Section of the tournament itself, there are many players already playing in Norway Chess, such as Alireza Firouzja from France, Vincent Keymer from Germany, and Wesley So from the United States, who will form a very strong field of competitors.
