The Indian squad for the upcoming prestigious tournaments like the Thomas and Uber Cup, Sudirman Cup has been announced by the Badminton Association of India (BAI). The two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has not been named in the squad after the shuttler requested the association for the same citing recovery post Olympics.
The Sudirman Cup is a world-mixed team championship, held every 2 years. China is the defending Champion. The 17th Edition of the Cup will be held this year in Vantaa, Finland from September 26–October 3, 2021. As Finland will hosts a BWF major event for the 1st time.
Whereas, the Thomas and Uber Cup is also a biennial event. With Thomas Cup being the men’s team world championships and Uber Cup, the women’s equivalent of the Thomas Cup. Both the tournament will be played alongside each other from October 9 – 17 in Denmark.
B Sai Praneeth and the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal will lead the men’s and women’s teams respectively at Thomas and Uber Cup.
Earlier, BAI had announced names consisting of 6 players who would directly play for the back-to-back tournaments, don’t need to go through trials as they are inside the Top-20 of BWF World Ranking.
The selection trials for the rest of the squad were held at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad where the shutters were selected based on their performances.

In Thomas Cup, India has been placed in Group C alongside China, the Netherlands, and Tahiti. Meanwhile, in Uber Cup – India is in Group B with Thailand, Spain, and Scotland being their opponents.
