Atletico Madrid was beaten 1-0  by Alaves in La Liga on Saturday dealing a blow to their title defense.

Victor Laguardia’s fourth-minute header from a Ruben Duarte corner was enough for the hosts to secure their first win of the season.

Atleti struggled to find a way back into the match but was unable to break down the host’s defense.

Marcos Llorente, Luis Suarez and substitute Angel Correa all went close for the visitors and Laguardia headed Kieran Trippier’s shot off the line. Correa came close to equalize for the champions but was denied by the keeper.

Goalscorer Laguardia was called into action when he cleared Rodrigo De Paul’s free-kick off the line.

Tomas Pina missed a glorious chance to double Alaves’ lead nine minutes from time but fired over when unmarked on the penalty spot. Alaves hung on to claim the first victory over Atleti since 2003.

Antoine Griezmann played the whole ninety minutes but did not register a shot on target. He has not hit the target for both Barcelona and Atleti after moving to the club.

It was Atletico Madrid’s first loss of the season in all competitions. Diego Simeone’s side has managed only two wins from their last six games. The result left Simeone’s side second, two points behind leaders Real Madrid. Real Madrid can extend their lead over Atletico Madrid to five points. They play Villarreal later on Saturday at Santiago Bernabeu.

Atletico Madrid next face Barcelona next weekend in a crucial match for both teams.
