Cameron Norrie wins Indian Wells

Cameron Norrie became the first Briton ever to win the Indian Wells championship. He defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, 3-6 6-4 6-1 to win the title.

Nikoloz took the first set winning it 3-6. Cameron Norrie led the first set early, but could not withstand the big-hitting Georgian. However, Norrie came back to beat the Georgian and forced a deciding set. He was made to work hard to grab the second set which ended 6-4 in the Briton’s favor.

Cameron Norrie raced ahead of his Georgian opponent 3-0 in the last set and never looked back. He capitalized on Basilahvili’s errors and defended very well to grab the decider to win the title.

With this win, Cameron Norrie reaches a career-high ranking of 15. The Briton was ranked 74th at the start of the year 2021. However, he broke into the top 20 rankings after having a brilliant season. He reached 6 finals and won 47 matches in all competitions winning two titles.

Paula Badosa triumphs

Spain’s Paula Badosa stood victor over former world no.1 player Victoria Azarenka to clinch the Indian Wells title.

The match was closely fought and entertaining throughout. Badosa took home the first set winning 7-6. However, Azarenka was too strong in the second as the Belarusian won the set 2-6 to equal the tie. Once again, Azarenka was on the pole position in the deciding set. She was leading Badosa 5-4 and serving for the match. However, the Spaniard came back to clinch the set 7-6 to win the title.

Azarenka missed out on her chance of winning the title for a record third time. Meanwhile, it was Badosa’s second WTA tour title after thd Belgrade victory.
