Robert Lewandowski shined for Barcelona in a 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday. The experienced Poland striker, celebrating his 34th birthday, put Barca ahead inside 50 seconds. However, Alexander Isak levelled for La Rea. Meanwhile, substitute Fat helped to create goals for Ousmane Dembele and Lewandowski, before scoring himself.

Barca’s first win of the season followed a disappointing goalless draw at home to Rayo  Vallecano on the opening weekend. Coach Xavi had called for “patience” from supporters after a summer spree, which saw Lewandowski, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie all move to Barcelona.

That quartet all made their debuts against Rayo. However, France defender Jules Kounde is still to be registered by the club as they look to overcome financial problems.

Earlier, Villarreal moved to the top as second-half goals from Yeremy Pino and Gerard Moreno secured a 2-0 victory at Atletico. Villarreal, who reached last season’s Champions League semifinals, is one of four teams with two wins from two matches in the La Liga. They edged above reigning champions Real Madrid on goal difference.
