Given this outstanding performance and their impressive performance at the UEFA EURO last year, where they overcame the trauma of Christian Eriksen’s opening-match cardiac arrest to advance to the quarterfinals, it should come as no surprise that they are being predicted as dark horses for the World Cup.
Eriksen is back at his peak and prepared to exert influence
A strong spine is provided by Kjaer and Hojbjerg.
Watch out for a full back who can score goals and an offensive “monster.”
Few sides breezed through the qualifying rounds for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM with the ease and confidence of Denmark. Kasper Hjulmand’s outstanding squad had yet to lose a point or even give up a goal when they became the second team, outside the hosts, to secure a spot at this year’s global championships. Given this outstanding performance and their impressive performance at the UEFA EURO last year, where they overcame the trauma of Christian Eriksen’s opening-match cardiac arrest to advance to the quarterfinals, it should come as no surprise that they are being predicted as dark horses for the World Cup.
The fact that the Danes, who are often cautious and restrained, are adopting this label and extolling their ambitions is even more peculiar. When asked about the label of “dark horses,” Hjulmand said to FIFA: “If they say we are one of the favourites, that would be even better. “We don’t believe that we are superior to others, but we do believe that we are a strong squad that is capable of competing against anybody. And we don’t mind the pressure that comes with being seen as contenders.

The relationships created as a result of Eriksen’s fall and recovery have only enhanced an already strong and well-rounded side. Hopes are high since Denmark has greater strength in depth than at any other point in their recent history. We’re not Brazil, Germany, or France, but as midfielder Pierre-Emile Hjobjerg said on FIFA+, “We have something the others don’t have.” Here, we focus on some individuals that are essential to the Danish national team’s chances of succeeding in Qatar.
Eriksen, Christian
The Midfielder Position
Age: 30
Last June, Christian Eriksen was, in his own words, “gone from this world” for five dreadful minutes. Anything more than his survival would have been too much to expect and ask for at that point. Eriksen, however, returned to Premier League football within nine months, and in March, 287 days after his cardiac attack, he made his international comeback. Eriksen scored inside the first two minutes of the game.
In a few more months, the midfielder will have switched from Brentford to Manchester United and will once again be in charge of the midfield for both his club and his nation. It is undeniably the stuff of football fairy tales already. And if Qatar is to have another amazing chapter added to it, Denmark will undoubtedly need their great playmaker to contribute. He is among the top five scorers in the nation all-time and is the current team’s top scorer with 38 goals.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
Age: 27
Position: Midfielder
The guys behind him provide Eriksen the space he needs to move around and probe enemy defences. As the core of the Danish midfield, Thomas Delaney continues to be an important player, while Hojbjerg moves from box to box, disrupting opponent attacks and advancing Denmark.
Hjulmand has said he “contributes a lot, both offensively and defensively,” and coaches like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, who have turned him into a cornerstone of the midfield at Tottenham Hotspur, completely concur. The Italian said, “No one asks me about Pierre, but in every game, he’s doing a terrific job, with and without the ball.
Peter Kjaer
Placement: center-back
Age: 33
Normally, Jurgen Klopp doesn’t complement the opposition’s players. It was noteworthy that he made a point of saying in public that Kjaer, an AC Milan visitor to Anfield, had “the respect of the whole football and sports world.” Naturally, the centre-back is Denmark’s captain, their most seasoned player, and is quickly approaching Peter Schmeichel’s 129-appearance milestone for a single national team. It was, as Klopp admitted, his “real leadership in a crisis” that lifted the veteran defender to a new position despite all of that and a club career that saw him flourish in the top tiers of France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The Danish national soccer team had its greatest year-end in years in December 2021, climbing to the ninth spot in the FIFA Men’s Ranking.
