NFC Team: Arizona Cardinals Team Rivalries of the Club with Other Teams

While rivalries can occasionally be sparked by a specific incident that leads to animosity between teams, players, coaches, or owners, for the most part they develop simply as a result of how frequently some teams face off against one another. They can also occasionally develop due to geography. NFL rivalries are frequently acknowledged as such by both fans and players. While some rivalries have existed for a long time, others are more recent and recognised due to the nature of the game and the history of the two teams. Because of league reorganisation and a decrease in matchup frequency, several rivalries have faded into obscurity. Due to the two teams playing in the same division, many modern rivalries have developed naturally.

Similarly, the Arizona Cardinals being a club of the National Football League has developed different rivalries, namely the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, and Chicago Bears.

Seattle Seahawks: The Cardinals and Seahawks have one of the more recent rivalries in the NFL after both teams were moved to the NFC West as a result of the league’s realignment in 2002. They then became divisional rivals. Since the mid-to-late 2010s, when the Seahawks and Cardinals frequently competed for control of the NFC West, this rivalry has grown to be one of the NFL’s fiercest. Although Seattle has more heated rivalries with the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and even the Green Bay Packers, many Cardinals supporters view the Seahawks as their main adversary owing to their dominance in the 2010s under quarterback Russell Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll. Los Angeles Rams: One of the team’s oldest rivalries, as the Rams played in Cleveland and the Cardinals were still based in Chicago when they first clashed in the 1937 NFL season. Despite the Arizona Cardinals’ best efforts, their rivalry with the Los Angeles Rams has resurfaced in recent years as both teams have had playoff success; the Rams are 9-1 since signing head coach Sean McVay in 2017. Both teams were competing for a playoff spot during the Week 17 encounter of the 2020 season; the Cardinals lost 18-7 and were eliminated from the postseason despite the Rams’ quarterback Jared Goff suffering an injury. Against the Rams the following year, the Cardinals’ streak came to an end. With a 7-0 record to open the year, they overtook the Rams for the NFC lead. Following their 7-0 start, the Cardinals lost 6 of their final 10 games as the Rams prevailed on Monday Night Football. After defeating the Dallas Cowboys in week 17, the Cardinals would secure a wild card spot. Losing 34-11, Kyler Murray threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a score.
Chicago Bears: The only two clubs still in existence since the league’s founding in 1920 are the Cardinals and the Bears, who compete against one another. The Bears were referred to at the time as the Decatur Staleys, while the Cardinals were known as the Racine Cardinals. The battle between the teams was dubbed “The Battle of Chicago” for 38 years when both teams relocated to Chicago in 1922, creating the first genuine rivalry in the league’s history. In the overall series, the Bears are ahead by 59-28-6.

As it is known to all, a healthy rivalry encourages and drives people to strive for excellence. It also helps to focus on efforts and creates rewards, in any sort of competition. Similar to this, the rivalries have in some ways contributed to the Arizona Cardinals’ great advancement in NFL history.
