Premier League is arguably the toughest football league in the whole world. The competition is so tough that there have been a total of five clubs from the competition that has gone on to win the Champions League. Here are some of the records in the Premier League that might never be broken.
Most points without winning the league
Just another example of how tough the Premier League is the competition between some of the clubs over the years. The Premier League has been dominated in recent years by Liverpool and Manchester City. But the 2018–19 season was when the bitter rivalry peaked. Every week, both clubs faced off against one another in great form. On the final day of the season, the winner was determined. With 98 points, Manchester City won the title. Liverpool finished the season with 97 points and almost missed winning it by one point.
Smallest title-winning margin
The historic Sergio Aguero goal that gave Manchester City the championship is arguably the most iconic Premier League moment ever. On points entering the last day of the season, Manchester City and Manchester United were leveled. On game day, Manchester United prevailed, although Manchester City trailed heading into the final seconds. Aguero’s goal in the 94th minute gave his team the victory and the title. Manchester City won the championship with just a +8 goal difference and a 0-point difference. Going into the final day both City and United had 86 points in 37 games. United won their game and went 2 points clear of City who was leveled in the last few seconds of their game. It was a special goal from the Argentinean striker that won City the title.
Longest undefeated run
Between May 2003 and October 2004, Arsenal under Arsene Wenger won 49 straight league games without suffering a defeat. The ‘Invincibles’ season, in which the Gunners were, undefeated the whole 2003–04 campaign, saw 38 of these 49 league games. They finished the season with a golden Premier League trophy and the title of Invincible after winning 26 games and drawing the 12 games.
20 goals and assists in the same season
Even just scoring 20 goals or providing 20 assists in a single Premier League season is an extremely difficult undertaking. To score 20 goals and provide 20 assists is something that was thought of as something unachievable. However, during the 2002–03 Premier League season, Thierry Henry, a legend at Arsenal, managed to score 20 goals and provide 20 assists. The only other player to maintain the same record in one of the top five leagues in Europe is the legendary Lionel Messi who did it in the 2019-20 season with Barcelona.
