Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says the European Super League will “save football at this crucial point in time” and demands players participating in the breakaway league won’t be restricted from playing along with their national sides.
The Spaniard’s remarks come after 12 major European clubs resolved to join another competition that will start “when is practicable”.
While the chairman of the new league claims that the move is aimed at improving the conditions of the sport and to save it from challenges, many clubs and fans across the world see this as a cash-grab sporting event that would kill the spirit of the game.
It is being seen as a move to privatize football.
Both UEFA and FIFA have issued a statement saying that they don’t recognize the newly founded League and would use all means necessary to stop its creation which includes banning the clubs and their players from taking part in FIFA-related world events.
