Tilak Varma, a 20-year-old cricketer, achieved his first T20 half-century during a match in Trinidad. He believes his success is due to the valuable guidance and influence of Rohit Sharma, a renowned player, and the experience he gained while playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In the first T20I match in Trinidad, Tilak scored 39 runs off 22 deliveries, making him India’s top scorer. He continued his impressive performance in the second match, scoring 51 runs off 41 deliveries, including five fours and a six.
Tilak expressed his gratitude to Rohit Sharma, whom he spends a lot of time with. During his first IPL, Rohit encouraged him, saying he is an all-format cricketer, which boosted his confidence. Rohit has been a significant support system for Tilak, always motivating him to enjoy the game and perform well.
The turning point for Tilak was the IPL, where his outstanding performance earned him a spot in the Indian team. He aims to continue his success in the future.
Tilak also shared a heartwarming connection with Rohit Sharma’s daughter, Samaira. He dedicated his celebration after scoring his maiden T20I fifty to her, as he had promised her earlier. Tilak and Samaira share a close bond.
Apart from Rohit Sharma, Tilak also discussed his game with Team India coach Rahul Dravid, who had been his coach during the Under-19 cricket days. Rahul advised him to stick to his basics, spend more time at the wicket, and most importantly, enjoy the game. Hardik Pandya also echoed the same advice, encouraging Tilak to enjoy his cricket considering his excellent performances in the IPL and domestic cricket.
In the match where India batted first and scored 152/7, Tilak’s maiden T20I half-century was crucial. However, Nicholas Pooran’s impressive knock of 67 runs off 40 deliveries helped the West Indies chase down the target with seven balls remaining, giving them a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Tilak praised Pooran’s performance, acknowledging the challenging wicket conditions. India aims to bounce back in the series during the third T20 match at Providence Stadium on Monday.
