Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s captain, will miss the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 clash against South Africa on Wednesday, as he has not yet fully recovered from a thumb injury.
Williamson suffered the thumb injury during the match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and has not received medical clearance from the New Zealand team.
In an injury update provided by New Zealand Cricket, it was stated, “Kane Williamson has been ruled out of Wednesday’s match against @ProteasMenCSA. Williamson has practiced in the nets over the past two days but will not be returning to match action tomorrow. He will undergo further assessment ahead of the team’s next match against @TheRealPCB.”

In the absence of Williamson, Tom Latham, a wicketkeeper-batter, will continue to lead the New Zealand team in the ongoing multi-nation tournament.

Williamson had recently made a comeback after recuperating from a hip injury that he sustained while playing for the Gujarat Titans in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In his very first competitive appearance post-recovery, Williamson managed an impressive unbeaten 78 off 107 balls against Bangladesh before leaving the field due to injury.
