India’s aggressive young opener Abhishek Sharma has risen to the No. 1 position in the ICC T20I batting rankings, replacing his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate Travis Head. This is a record-breaking ascent and makes Abhishek just the third Indian cricketer to do this, after Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav.
Travis Head’s Slide Following 13 Months on Top
Travis Head, who has been at the summit of the ICC T20 rankings since June 2024, slipped out due to a lack of action. He last played a T20I in September 2024 and skipped Australia’s recent five-match T20I series against the West Indies, paving the way for Abhishek to move into the first position.
Abhishek’s Match-Winning Knock That Sealed the Deal
Abhishek Sharma’s rise to stardom owed a lot to his magnificent 135 off 54 balls in the last T20I against England as part of the five-match series in February 2025. The century-winning innings was instrumental in the series of changes in ranking points that ultimately saw Abhishek Sharma hold the number one spot in the ICC T20 batting rankings.
