When playing in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2016 match where Sri Lanka faced England. However, that was not the most unfortunate event, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dushan Hemantha was also out hit wicket, which is an uncommon event.
That wasn’t the only reason it was disappointing to Sri Lanka; England continued to outscore Sri Lanka in this match.
Dushan Hemantha’s Unfortunate Hit-Wicket Dismissal
Sri Lanka were in a deep mess while chasing a fighting total of 147 runs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. With 52/6 in the ninth over, Dushan Hemantha was introduced to partner captain Dasun Shanaka, in a bid to turn the innings around.

However, his time at the crease was short-lived. In the 12th over, while facing Jamie Overton, Dushan Hemantha’s time at the crease came to an abrupt end. In a bid to counter the sharp short ball, which was aimed at his body, he was rushed for room and lost control of his follow-through.
In the process, he accidentally knocked over the bails with his bat. The hit-wicket dismissal left everyone in awe and further soured Sri Lanka’s chances.
This unusual dismissal meant that Dushan Hemantha could only last for an eight-ball innings before walking back to the pavilion.
Sri Lanka Collapse Under Pressure
The fall of Dushan Hemantha’s wicket further dented Sri Lanka’s position, leaving them at 69/7 in the 12th over. The pressure continued to build as wickets kept tumbling intermittently.
Captain Dasun Shanaka tried to hold the innings together, scoring a gritty 30 runs. But his fight was cut short in the 15th over as he was bowled by Adil Rashid.
At one stage, Sri Lanka were left staring at a comprehensive defeat in their first Super 8 match as the scoreboard read 87/8 in the 16th over. England’s strong bowling lineup made sure that there was no way back for the hosts.
Phil Salt’s pivotal innings sets the tone for the match
Phil Salt built a solid foundation for England’s win, bringing balance into an uncertain start. The quick scoring opener hit six fours and two sixes while making 62 runs off 40 balls in his innings.
Though none of the England batters could score more than 21 runs, Salt’s composed innings helped England post a competitive total of 146/9, which proved more than enough for the struggling batting lineup of Sri Lanka.
Match Summary: England Outclass Sri Lanka
The weird dismissal of Dushan Hemantha was also a very telling moment in this match. England really took advantage of Sri Lanka’s weak middle-order batting and put pressure on the chasing team throughout the duration of the innings.
England’s supremacy in this performance enhances their standing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8, meanwhile, Sri Lanka continue to look for answers.
