Lionel Messi is one of the greatest football players ever; millions know him as Leo or La Pulga, but very few people realize where his first name came from. It is not from a famous Argentine player or family tradition. Instead, it comes from an American singer who was huge in the 1980s – Lionel Richie.

The surprising story behind Lionel Messi’s first name

Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. His parents, Jorge Messi and Celia (or Cecilia) María Cuccittini, who already had two older sons, needed a name for their third boy. Celia liked “Leonel” as it sounded nice and strong. But when Jorge went to register the baby at the civil registry, he made a small change. He wrote “Lionel” instead.

Both Jorge and Celia were big fans of the American singer Lionel Richie. In the 1980s, Richie’s songs were everywhere – romantic ballads like “Hello,” “All Night Long,” and “Say You, Say Me.” His album Dancing on the Ceiling came out in 1986, just before Messi was born, and it was very popular in Argentina. Messi’s father loved the music so much that he decided to give his son a very similar name.

Messi’s mother, Celia, revealed in an interview on Telefe that she was not happy. “When Jorge came back from registering him, I almost killed him.” She further explained that they both liked Lionel Richie a lot, so the name stuck. Even though she wanted “L0eonel,” the official papers said Lionel, and that became his name.

At first, Lionel Richie himself thought the story was a joke. He heard about it years later and said he was in Europe when he read an article where Messi’s mother confirmed it. “I was speechless,” Richie recalled. “I thought, ‘It’s true!’”Over time, Richie became a real fan of the player, after Argentina lost the 2016 Copa America final, Richie sent Messi encouraging words, comparing his own losses at the Grammys to Messi’s setbacks and telling him he would rise again.

The two Lionels finally met in person in April 2025 in Miami. After Inter Miami’s win, Messi got to shake hands with the singer who inspired his name. Richie posted photos on Instagram with the caption: “When Lionel meets Lionel! His mom named him after me… and here we are. Great meeting you after all these years.”

What does the name Lionel mean?

The meaning behind the name Lionel has roots in Latin and French. It comes from “Leo,” which means “lion.”, while in French, it is a diminutive of “lion,” suggesting strength, courage, and nobility. It fits Messi perfectly, a small player with a huge heart who fights like a lion on the pitch.

Messi grew up in a working-class family in Rosario. His father worked at a steel factory, and his mother worked in a workshop. Money was tight, especially after Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency when he was young. The family had to make hard choices so he could get treatment. Through all that, Messi stayed focused on football and joined Newell’s Old Boys as a kid and later moved to Barcelona at age 13. The rest is history as he has won eight Ballon d’Or awards, Champions League titles, and the 2022 World Cup that completed his legacy.

Even today, people close to him call him Leo or Lio. His full name Lionel is mostly used in official documents or big announcements. But the story behind it shows something beautiful about his parents. They were young people who loved music and wanted to give their son a special name. A small decision at the registry office created one of the most famous names in sports.

A Fun Connection Across Worlds Football and music do not mix often, but this story brings them together. Lionel Richie built a career singing about love and celebration, while Messi built his on the pitch with skill, humility, and joy. Both reached the top of their fields and inspired millions. Richie once said he wished he could play football like Messi. Messi, in his quiet way, probably appreciates the music that indirectly gave him his name.
