Barron Hilton, a 32-year-old hotel owner, was awarded a Los Angeles franchise for the nascent American Football League in 1959 when he founded the Los Angeles Chargers. Los Angeles won the AFL Western division in 1960, but the team struggled to gain popularity among fans. Inspired by Jack Murphy, the sports editor of San Diego’s local newspaper, Hilton relocated the Chargers to San Diego the following year.

The Chargers now have 34,000 seats at the historic Balboa Stadium. The San Diego Chargers, led by coach Sid Gillman, became one of the all-time great glamour teams. With their high-scoring, high-energy juggernauts, Gillman’s first teams won their divisions in five of the first six AFL seasons. The Chargers won the 1963 AFL title and reached four AFL Championship Games and five AFL Playoffs before joining the NFL. • Barron Hilton formed the Chargers in Los Angeles in 1959. Due to rivalry with the Los Angeles Rams, the franchise relocated to San Diego 120 miles south in 1961.
• From 1961 to 1965, while a member of the American Football League, the Chargers experienced high-scoring years and won four AFL West titles and one AFL championship.
• From 1965 to 1979, the Chargers did not win another championship. After Don Coryell took over as head coach in 1978, the Chargers won the AFC West division in 1979, 1980, and 1981 and reached two AFC Championship games.
