The Miami Dolphins is the most established professional sports team in Florida, founded in 1965. As the ninth team to enter the American Football League in 1966, they made their debut in the professional football league that same year. Six years later, Miami established a new standard for perfection in the National Football League by completing a perfect season. After claiming the AFC Eastern division championship, as well as the AFC crown, the 1972 Miami Dolphins, ended their season with a perfect 17-0 record by winning Super Bowl VII against the Washington Redskins by a score of 14-7.
In their first-ever American Football League season, the Joseph Robbie-founded Dolphins started off with a perfect game in their first contest. Between 1983 and 1999, quarterback Dan Marino grew into one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL), setting many passing records for the league during that period. Marino guided the Dolphins to five division titles, ten playoff berths, and participation in Super Bowl XIX before resigning at the end of the 1999 season. Since then, the Dolphins have only had middling success in the NFL, as evidenced by the fact that they have appeared in the playoffs only four times. Since 1970, the Dolphins have been members of the AFC East division of the National Football League. Forbes estimates that the worth of the franchise is somewhere around 4.6 billion dollars at this time.

The Miami Dolphins have one of the most impressive playoff records for a young team in their history of playing the game. From the 1970s through the 1990s, the Miami Dolphins were consistently regarded as one of the most formidable playoff candidates in the National Football League (NFL). They were victorious in both Super Bowls (1972 and 1973). Additionally, the Miami Dolphins have been awarded five Conference championships, of which they have won three in a row (1971-73). The Dolphins have also won 13 division titles throughout their history. Since 2000, the Miami Dolphins have had a difficult time qualifying for the NFL playoffs, even though they were once one of the most successful teams. Since 2000, the franchise has participated in the postseason a mere three times (2001, 2008 and 2016).
