The National Football League’s (NFL) Pittsburgh Steelers is among the league’s franchises with the longest continuous existence (NFL). The Pittsburgh Steelers was originally known as the Pittsburgh Pirates when they were founded in 1933. In 1940, they changed their name to reflect their new identity as the Pittsburgh Steelers. Before the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the Steelers did not have much success in the National Football League. However, after the merger, the Steelers became one of the most successful franchises in the history of the NFL. They still retain the record for being the franchise with the most victories in the Super Bowl (tied with the New England Patriots).   • Arthur J. Rooney started the Pittsburgh team, the “Pittsburgh Pirates”, in 1933. In 1940, they became the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  • Under head coach Chuck Noll, the team did very well in the 1970s. The Steelers went to the playoffs eight times and won four Super Bowls.
  • In the first round of the NFL draft in 1938, Pittsburgh picked Byron White, who would later become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
  • The Steelers became one of the most successful NFL teams after drafting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. They went on to win the 2006 and 2009 Super Bowls.
  • The Steelers were the first NFL team to appoint an African American assistant coach (1957, Lowell Perry), to have an African American Super Bowl MVP (1975, Franco Harris), to have an African American coordinator (1984, Tony Dungy), and to hire a female as a full-time sports trainer (2002, Ariko Iso).
