The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) has unveiled the format for the highly anticipated I-League 2023-24 season. With a dynamic shift, the league will witness the participation of 13 clubs, competing in a captivating home-and-away double round-robin arrangement. The AIFF’s League Committee made this decision, aiming to elevate the competitiveness and allure of Indian football.
Throughout the season, fans can expect a total of 156 exhilarating matches, as each team engages in 24 challenging encounters. The club that secures the pinnacle of the league table will earn the distinguished title of I-League 2023-24 champions. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to strive for promotion to the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25, provided they fulfill the Club Licensing criteria.
The AIFF emphasizes that the clubs’ participation is contingent upon the successful completion of the AIFF’s Club Licensing process. This initiative underscores the commitment to maintaining high standards and professionalism in the league.
AIFF Secretary General Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran expressed his enthusiasm for the evolving league structure, highlighting its role in fostering a competitive environment. He shared, “The expansion of clubs participating in the I-League and across various divisions demonstrates our dedication to enhancing Indian football on a national scale. Our decisions are geared towards empowering clubs to progress from grassroots to national levels, thereby contributing to the overall advancement of the sport.”
The I-League 2023-24 introduces adjustments to the foreign player quota. Clubs will now be allowed to register up to five foreign players, with a maximum of three permitted on the field simultaneously during matches. This change seeks to enhance the gameplay while accommodating international talent.
The league landscape has also evolved in terms of the AFC player quota requirements. This season, the I-League will no longer enforce any AFC player quota, enabling clubs to focus on assembling the best possible squads to compete at the highest level.
Lalnghinglova Hmar, the committee chairperson, emphasized the significance of the well-connected league structure, encompassing the ISL, I-League, Second Division, and Third Division. This comprehensive network aims to create a robust foundation for Indian football’s growth and development.
As the upcoming I-League 2023-24 season approaches, anticipation mounts for the thrilling clashes that await, showcasing the determination and skill of the participating clubs.
