New Castle United, Blackburn Rovers Legend Alan Shearer and Arsenal’s top goal scorer Thierry Henry have been named the first 2 players in the newly launched Premier League Hall Of Fame. Alan Shearer started his senior career in 1988 with Southampton. He played for 4 years there and scored 23 goals in 118 appearances. He left Southampton in 1992 and joined Blackburn Rovers. It was this club that made him a legend in football.
The Englishman scored 112 goals in 138 appearances for the club. One of the best goal-per game-ratio at that time. He later took that form to New castle United in 1996. He fired 148 goals in 303 appearances for the club. In total Shearer scored 283 goals for the 3 clubs out of which 260 came in the Premier League. He is till date the top goal scorer in the Premier League.
Thierry Henry joined Arsenal in 1999 and the rest is history. He won 4 golden boots with the club. He was one of the main reasons Arsenal remained unbeaten in 2003-2004 season. The Frenchman also won the World cup and is regarded by many as Premier League’s greatest ever player.
On receiving this honour Henry said- “To be inducted alongside Alan Shearer as the two first inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame is more than special. When I was young, I was just trying to make sure I could get a pair of boots and now we’re talking about the Hall of Fame. If you asked me at the start of my career about entering the Hall of Fame, I wouldn’t have believed you. It’s an amazing honour.”
Alan Shearer also shared some words- “When you look at some of the unbelievable players to have graced the Premier League – week in, week out, year in, year out – I feel very honoured to join the Hall of Fame.”
Shearer also added- “All I ever wanted to be was a professional footballer. It was my dream to do that, my dream to win trophies and my dream to score at St James’ Park, to wear the No 9 black-and-white shirt and it was fantastic. I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Joining Shearer and Henry as the inaugural Hall of Fame members will be six other Premier League stars, as voted for by football fans. A shortlist of 23 nominees will be announced during a TV show on Sky Sports on Monday. Voting will take place at www.premierleague.com/halloffame and on the official Premier League app and is open until 9 May.
