The Amstel Gold Race 2025 is set to take place in the Netherlands on Sunday (20 April). It marks the turning point of the spring classics, with the climbers and stage racers replacing the cobbled classics riders as the favourites.
The event is a one-day classic road cycling race held annually since 1966 in the province of Limburg, Netherlands. Since 1989 the event has been included in season-long competitions at the highest level of UCI, as part of the UCI Road World Cup (1989–2004), the UCI ProTour (2005–2010), UCI World Ranking (2009–2010) and since 2011 of the UCI World Tour.
The Amstel Gold Race is the only one-day World Tour race staged in the Netherlands and is considered the most important Dutch road cycling event.
Amstel Gold Race 2025: Stars to watch
World champion Tadej Pogacar, who missed out at Paris–Roubaix last week, will be aiming to regain the crown he last won in 2023. The Slovenian has already won two men’s one-day classics this year, Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders, as well as claiming overall victory in the UAE Tour stage race. He has found a place on the podium in each of the races he has competed in so far in 2025- a second-place finish in the Roubaix Velodrome and a third place at Milano–Sanremo.
Defending champion Tom Pidcock, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, and 2021 Amstel Gold Race winner Wout van Aert will pose a challenge to Pogacar.
The Amstel Gold Race Ladies’ Edition 2025, the women’s race, will also take place on Sunday before the men’s event.
Previous winners Demi Vollering, Marianne Vos, and Kasia Niewiadoma are all included in the field. Tour of Flanders winner Lotte Kopecky, who is also a two-time world champion – is aiming to win her first title, after finishing second in 2023.
Amstel Gold Race 2025: Race routes
Both the men’s and women’s races begin in Maastricht and finish in Berg en Terblijt. However, the women’s race goes around a finishing circuit following the first passage of the famed Cauberg climb – which is climbed five times in a 157.4km (97.8mi) race. There will be a total of 1840m (6037ft) of climbing.
Meanwhile, the men’s route heads further south, following the Dutch–German border at Aachen and even sneaking into Belgium for a few short kilometres at Gemmenich before heading back north and west. The Cauberg is climbed three times in the race, an increase from just twice last year. The hills of Limburg, will ascend to 3200m (10,500ft) of elevation across 255.9km (159.0mi) of racing, riding the finishing circuit just once.
