Tirreno-Adriatico: List Of Winners In History

5 Min Read

The Tirreno-Adriatico, nicknamed the “Race of the Two Seas”, is one of Italy’s premier early-season road cycling stage races. Stretching from the Tyrrhenian coast in the west to the Adriatic coast in the east, the race has long served as an important preparation for the Giro d’Italia. Today, it is part of the UCI World Tour, cycling’s top level of professional competition.

First held in 1966, the inaugural edition ran over just three stages. Since the second edition, the race has traditionally concluded in San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic coast. Over the decades, the race has evolved significantly: between 1984 and 2001, it expanded to six to eight stages and moved further into northern and central Italy. In 2002, it was standardized to seven stages, a format that remains today.

The Tirreno-Adriatico has produced a host of cycling legends. Belgian Roger De Vlaeminck holds the record with six consecutive victories in the 1970s, while Italian Francesco Moser won twice and finished on the podium six times. In the 1990s, Swiss time-trial specialist Tony Rominger and Dane Rolf Sørensen both claimed two victories. More recently, Grand Tour champions such as Vincenzo Nibali, Cadel Evans, and Alberto Contador have added their names to the roll of honour, with Colombian climber Nairo Quintana winning in 2015 and 2017.

The modern race is a seven-stage event that challenges riders with a mix of flat, hilly, and mountainous terrain, including demanding climbs in the Apennines. It has become a key early-season test for riders targeting the year’s major stage races. The Tirreno–Adriatico joined the UCI ProTour in 2005, briefly left the top-tier calendar in 2008, and returned in 2011 as part of the UCI World Tour.
