The Alters is a fresh sci-fi game full of cool base-building, survival, and storytelling features. It’s now available on PC and next-gen consoles, and many players are loving it. But for some PC users, the game has been facing problems like crashing, freezing, or stuttering while playing.
If you’re dealing with these issues, don’t worry. Below are some simple ways you can try to fix the problem on your own before waiting for the official patch from 11 Bit Studios.
Note: These are workarounds, not guaranteed fixes. Still, they’ve worked for many players and are worth trying.
1. Keep Your Graphics Card Drivers Updated
Even if your PC has a high-end GPU, outdated drivers can cause performance drops.
For Nvidia users:
- Open the Nvidia App (formerly GeForce Experience).
- Click on the Drivers section.
- If a new update is available, click Download.
- Once downloaded, choose Express Installation to update your driver easily.
For AMD users:
- Download and open the AMD Adrenalin Edition software.
- The app will auto-scan for new drivers.
- If one is available, click Download Now.
- Let it install automatically once done.
2. Run the Game as an Administrator
Running the game with admin rights can help allocate more system power to it, reducing crashes and stutters.
Here’s how:
- Right-click on the The Alters.exe file.
- Click Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check the box for Run this program as an administrator.
- Also, tick Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose Windows 8.
3. Verify Game Files in Steam
Sometimes, files get damaged during installation, which can cause problems like random crashes or slow gameplay. Here’s how to fix that:
- Open Steam.
- Go to your Library and find The Alters.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select the Installed Files tab.
- Click on Verify integrity of game files.
- Steam will now check and fix any missing or broken files.
