In the aftermath of the tragic death of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, significant developments have occurred as arrests were made following concerns raised by his father, Samson Cheruiyot. Cheruiyot asserted that four strangers visited their home before Kelvin’s fatal car crash.
Kenyan police have confirmed the detention of four unidentified men, responding to Cheruiyot’s demand for a thorough investigation. “The four were taken to Elgeyo Marakwet for further investigations,” stated Keiyo South Sub County commandant Abdullahi Dahir, emphasizing that all four individuals come from Uasin Gishu County.
The 24-year-old Kenyan long-distance runner, along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana, lost their lives in a road traffic accident. Kelvin Kiptum was driving a Toyota Premio with two passengers – Hakizimana and a woman identified as Sharon Kosgey, en route to Eldoret.
Kelvin Kiptum made headlines at the Chicago Marathon in October 2023, where he shattered the world record for the marathon distance previously held by Kenyan superstar Eliud Kipchoge. Kiptum completed the marathon in an impressive time of two hours and thirty-five seconds (2:00:35).
His marathon prowess is evident with records of 2:01:53 in the 2022 Valencia Marathon, 2:01:25 in the London Marathon, and the groundbreaking 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon last year. Kiptum held three out of the seven fastest marathon times ever set, solidifying his status as a remarkable athlete.
